After Independence
The key to understand this painting is based on the clothing hung from the pegs. To become a free and independent nation we fought a war against the world’s leading army at that time, a ragtag group of farmers, craftsmen, and frontiersmen who led a rebellion which created a new nation. In this painting we see the regimental coat of a Continental Line soldier along with his cocked hat and haversack. The French who became our allies gave these coats to the Continental Army. In this painting a peaceful autumn day is seen through the window. A cat naps under the table loaded with pottery. The Revolution was fought for this peace.
