Attack on a Forgotten Fort
During the colonial wars the frontier settlements built wooden stockade forts for protect against roving bands of Indians and their European allies. It was a dangerous time to try to build a life on the fringes of the American frontier. The attacks were fast and unexpected. Farmers were killed in their fields, women and children carried off into captivity, or worse. In this painting we see militiamen from the burning fort in the background, giving chase to a band of Indians. They were enraged at loosing their farms and watching a seasons harvest go up in smoke. With tempers flaring many militiamen wanted revenge and would follow after the roving bands. Here we see the typical result, a hidden ambush where again the militia felt the sting of the surprise attack.
