Bake Day

Nothing in early America was easy. We are use to simply turning a knob on our kitchen ovens to bake a premade frozen pie. Our grandmothers from the past did not have that same luxury. Bake day was when all the baking for the entire week was done in one day. The main reason for this was the labor involved with the wood heated brick oven. Built into the fireplace, the oven was stoked with wood and burned until the hot hardwood coals saturated the bricks with heat. The bricks retained the heat for several hours. The women would have breads and deserts ready to go and the oven would continue baking all day until she had the kitchen full of wonderful smelling baked goods.
