Basket Weaver
This is a very small painting with a lot of detail. I was down in Williamsburg Virginia when I saw this scene. The basket weavers were gone but what remained were the labors and materials of their work. Like stoneware and redware, baskets were a big part of early American life. They were used for many chores such as gathering berries or nuts, holding wool from sheared sheep, and many other duties. There has been a big debate for years with historians of the Material Culture; what came first the basket or the pottery?
