The Blue Dry Sink
When I came across this setting in an old house in Michigan, the wall was a stark white and there was nothing above the sink. To break up this large area, I added on the stoneware shelf and toned the wall to a warm family of earth colors. I think it works well with the weathered old dry sink. I enjoyed the feel of the old wooden tubs and piggins. You can see two different types of the "cooper's art" depicted here, the wet and the dry. The dry tub is on the floor to the far left. This was used to store anything dry such as grains, sugar, corn, etc. My grandma had one just like it when we were kids. She used to keep her flour stored in it. The wet piggins and tubs were used naturally to hold liquids and for washing. Some were even used for maple sugaring. This painting is full of a rich wealth of utilitarian-ware, once essential for life in early America, and now the antiques we all love to collect and display in our homes.
