The Covered Bridge
The covered bridge is a romantic symbol from a by-gone era. They were constructed with enclosed walls and a roof to keep the elements off the main planking to avoid the rotting of the timbers. Many were painted a barn red to help preserve the wood. This made for a complimentary color contrast with a red bridge and green trees. The main subject in this painting is a beautiful young lady with a basket, highlighted in a romantic contrast between the darkness of the bridge and the natural autumn lighting. This scene was inspired from "Old Sturbridge Village".
