Decoy Rig

A summer day shows us a scene of a red door leading to a hunters shed. A rig of wooden hand-carved decoys is hung outside without a care, after all these are utilitarian objects not works of fine art. The rig was simply a group of decoys tied together with line so they wouldn't float away. These decoys resembled ducks peacefully floating on the waters of a lake or pond. Migrating ducks would see them and be lured into thinking it was a safe place to rest and forage. Rigs were carved usually for a hunter by one local waterfowl carver. These masters of the chisel and knife were well know in their local areas, and today we can trace these craftsmen through their styles which reflect back to their local origins.
