Decoy Winter

This still life is one of my favorite paintings. The weathered decoy sits on a wooden shelf along with sinkers and fishing hooks. Natural light falls upon the decoy pulling your eye to its form. The window view tells us that winter has set in and the tools of the outdoorsman have to wait for the changing of the seasons. A photograph has fallen from the frame telling us this is a cabin or shed probably not used in the winter months. Decoys hold a romance for us from days gone by. The skies were so full of migrating waterfowl that craftsmen made their living carving wooden ducks to fill the rigs of professional hunters. They furnished the finest hotel restaurants on the East Coast with wild duck.
