Dishwashing Conversation
A woman’s work is never done, especially in early America. Every chore is a labor. Water had to be hauled and heated, cleaning was done with a broom and elbow grease. Meals not only had to be prepared over a wood fire but the food had to be preserved and stored to last through the seasons. In this painting two ladies labor over a dry sink doing the dishes. The open door and the window add dramatic lighting to the kitchen scene. Since washing clothing was not easy aprons were essential wear for a lady. This scene had its inspiration from western New York.
