"Give....Fire"
This was the command of all armies during the colonial wars. The soldiers would take each loading command one at a time, from “Handle your….cartridge”, to “Make…ready” and finally “Give…fire”. The flint would hit the frizzen crating a shower of sparks and touch off the priming in the pan. The flash from the pan would burn through the touch hole into the barrel and ignite the main charge. The Brown Bess musket would roar to life sending the .78 caliber round ball down field. A good soldier could load and fire every 15 seconds. In this painting a British Pioneer flanked by a Grenadier about to fire their Brown Bess muskets. I found the deep red colors to be very effective in this composition along with the regimental flag behind the subjects.
