The Goose Hunter
Hunting was not a sport in colonial America; it was essential as a source of food. A smooth bore flintlock musket was not a very accurate weapon. Basically you had a somewhat accurate aim at 30-40 yards. It was the American long rifle, which added accuracy for the hunter. In this scene we see a hunter wearing leggings which was we adopted from the Indians. They kept his breeches from being torn. The frock coat was a functional garment. It was cut large so the owner could store items in it, like a big envelope. He carries a Canada Goose over his shoulder, a meal his wife is sure to appreciate. The autumn scene adds to the genre of the season with the migrating geese overhead. Autumn is my favorite season so many of my paintings reflect the fall.
