The Sherman tank was one heavy-duty machine. Although it’s armor was not as strong as the German Panthers or Tigers it was one impressive tank. I had a neighbor while I was growing up who was a member of a Sherman tank crew. He told some great stories of the push to Germany, and the destroyed towns they drove through. As a kid I remember playing with his tankers helmet and wearing it around while his kids wore the captured German helmets. The infantry was always glad to see the Sherman tanks arrive. They used them as cover and knew once they discovered a hot spot the Sherman could solve that problem.
