The Highlander
The Scottish highlands brought to the British Army a highly motivated fighting force. These units made up for a slack in English recruitment and turned out to be much in their favor. The Scottish soldiers also prospered by leaving behind a poor economy and a very depressing life style. Many never returned to Scotland and settled in America. The Highland units were very hard fighters and gained much respect on the battlefield. In this painting a highlander stands guard in front of an officer’s wall tent. His uniform is somewhat different for the standard issue since they retained their traditional clan kilts, sporran, and bonnet.
