Hunters Homecoming
A hunter and his dog return to his family. They will eat well again tonight as evidenced by the wildfowl over his shoulder. The hand-hewed log cabin stands proud against the tree line. His fence and field tell us he is a hard worker. No doubt he will have cattle to pasture soon. The smokehouse will be used as the summer progresses to cure venison for the long winter. His children are excited upon his return. No doubt he will have some tall tales to tell over the supper table tonight. Children in colonial America had to create their own entertainment. Stories were a staple and flourished in this period. There would be tales of Indian attacks on the frontier, the action of the armies, talk of a neighbor building a cabin over the next hill.
