Laundry Day

Laundry was not a chore easily completed. Not only did the women have to haul and heat the water, but they also had to scrub the clothes by hand with homemade soap. Clothes were worn many days before they were laundered. Small brooms were used to brush off dirt and soil from the clothes. A child would be in serious trouble if their clothes were not hung up before they went to bed. Clothes were handmade from hand woven fabric. Great care was used to make them last. In this painting you can see the various tubs, kettles, and sock forms used on laundry day.
