The Molasses Barrel
The General Store in the early 19th century was a gathering place to receive news and gossip, share local events and politics, and naturally purchase a variety of goods. In rural America the General Store provided everything from dry goods to nails, yard goods to tools, and tin ware to candles. I enjoyed the subtle differences in the wood tones and trying to paint such a wide variety browns. I took some artistic liberties with the historic lettering on the original molasses barrel, and some of the other utilitarian containers. My last name, and my wife Janet's maiden name are on the barrel, and some of my friends names appear on other objects. My Mom grew up in Avon NY. I was raised in Geneseo next door.
