Onondaga Warrior
This is a portrait of a young Onondaga warrior who is dressed in the typical garb of an 18th century native. His head was been plucked of all hair except for the scalp lock which is left long and often decorated with feathers, porcupine guard hairs, or deer hair. His face and body has been tattooed, and also painted red with war paint as a symbol of his bravery. His shirt is a hunting frock made from handspun linen. Over it we see a decorated strap holding his shoulder bag, and another strap supporting his war club referred to as a gun stock club. He holds his pride and joy, a Pennsylvania flintlock long rifle. The Onondaga are members of the Iroquois Confederation. They are a very important tribe being assigned the sacred job as keepers of the council fire.
