Redware and Strawberries
This still-life arrangement shows the use of redware in early American life. It is a low fire clay, which is very porous and requires glazing to become waterproof. This arrangement has great color and highlights. The beat juice can be seen in the foreground bowl next to the freshly picked strawberries. The hand-hewn logs of the cabin add to the rustic setting. Along with the redware is a salt glazed piece of stoneware and a piece glazed in the deep chocolate color of Albany slip. This was painted from references in western New York.
