Seneca Autumn
The Seneca were the “keepers of the western door”. They were the tribe located in the western most region of New York State. As members of the Iroquois Confederacy they were the most fierce and feared of all the tribes. During the French and Indian War they were torn between their support for the British and the French. As the Revolutionary War blazed the Seneca allied themselves to the British and launched frontier raids out of Fort Niagara. In this painting we see a warrior dressed in his deerskin leggings, breech cloth, and a linen shirt. His weapon is a flintlock Pennsylvania style long rifle. Autumn in the hills of western New York makes a warm colorful background to this scene.
