Senecas at the Genessee

I grew up a stone throw from this scene. It comes from Letchworth State Park and behind the Seneca warriors you can see the Grand Canyon of the East, the Genessee River gorge. This was the homeland of the Seneca for centuries. At the park you can see some great displays of their culture at the museum by the falls. By looking at the warriors in this painting, you can see a mix of native and European cultures. They adorn themselves in European style shirts and trade silvers, carry flintlock muskets and metal tomahawks, but retain their fierce native appearance with warpaint and scalp locks. The native tribes of America learned quickly to depend on European tools and supplies. They became dependent upon the Europeans for their necessities and would fight for whatever country they believed would benefit them the most.
