Spanish Silver
Not all Spanish silver was aboard ships sunk in the Atlantic. In Colonial America Spain continued their rich tradition of fine silver work both for jewelry and tableware. In this painting we can see the fine jewelry displayed on the daughter of a wealthy rancho owner. As their empires grew (some ranchos were over 80 square miles) they became quite wealthy and lived "A life of a prince". This young lady would have many privileges through this wealth. Her home would be in a spacious hacienda, her husband would be prearranged to meet both wealth and social values. The Spanish culture flourished in the Southwest and California until the late 1840's when the Mexican American War turned their world upside down.
