The Spoils of War
During the French and Indian War raids on British troops were encouraged by the French towards their Indian allies. Their prize was whatever they could carry back to their homelands, along with the satisfaction of retaliation on the encroaching English. Here we see a wagon of goods captured by a Huron war party in the lake country of upstate New York. Members of the 60th Royal Americans lay dead in the grass while native warriors load up their plunder, along with their prize possion, a young female captive who was being escorted by the unsuspecting colonial troops. Her fate was probably that of prisoner exchange arranged through the French administrators in Canada, or adoption into the Huron tribe.
