Stoneware and Cheese
I have been interested in early American stoneware and pottery for many years. I’ve even tried to master the potter’s wheel and make my own jugs and crocks. I think I’ll stick with painting. Stoneware clay came from different parts of the country and each had it’s own distinct color. Some had a gray colored clay bodies, and others warm tan colors. Stoneware was used in every house in early America. They stored everything from vinegar and flour, to popcorn and molasses. In this painting there is a well-rounded array of many different utilitarian pieces. Baskets, stoneware, tin lanterns and candle molds, and homemade cheese. Due to food storage problems cheese was easy to keep for long periods and good way of using milk before it spoiled.
