Stoneware and Kegs
Besides enjoying the various colors of antique stoneware I admire the 19th century folk art designs applied to the pieces. These designs ranged from floral designs, to birds and animals. The designs were made from a cobalt blue slip (liquid clay) applied by pouring the liquid from a slip-cup. Most of the decoration was done by local women, probably the potter’s wife or daughter. The stoneware was fired in a wood heated kiln. Once it reached its correct temperature the potter would shovel in rock salt. The salt would vaporize and stick to the clay creating a hard clear glass-like coating. This was called salt glaze. The inside of the pieces were coated with a dark chocolate brown slip called Albany glaze. The process was rather noxious since a by-product of the vaporized salt was chlorine gas. Potteries were located out of town for that reason.
