The Streets of Soest

Secure with the firepower of a heavy 50-caliber heavy machine gun, a soldier of the Ninth Army patrols the streets of Soest in an armored car. A member of the 95th Infantry is checking out buildings on foot and runs across the rubble covered streets to report in. The city of Soest in the northeastern Ruhr area was a key railroad junction heavily defended by the 116th Panzer Division. US fighter-bombers laid heavy destruction on the city, which is seen here in ruins. The Army Air Force killer over 300 Germans in securing the city and cutting the vital rail system.
