Summer Kitchen
The summer kitchen was an add-on building, or even a separate structure from the main house in the early days. Since all the cooking was done with wood, it became very hot in the kitchen so Yankee ingenuity came into play and they developed a kitchen separated from the living areas of the main house. The heat would be kept away in this fashion so the house would remain cool on warm summer days. In this painting, I was drawn to all the fine antique kitchen wear. It was fun to paint the details, especially the canning jars full of string beans, peaches, and cherries. The wood adds a warmth to the simple interior of a day when women cooked meals in Summer Kitchens.
