The Mission
Colonial America was greatly influenced in the Southwest and California by the Spanish Missions. The objective of Spain was to spread the word of God and to convert the native Indians to the Holy Roman Catholic Church. To accomplish this task impressive Missions had to be constructed. This was a means to show the Indians the way to God, using Indian labor for the construction. It was also a means of communication for the outposts of Colonial Spain. The missions were arranged in such a manner that a rider could easily travel from to another and have a place to rest, a fresh horse, and keep the lines of communication open.
