The Woodland Lake Country
The lakes and rivers of North America were the waterways to the interior. Roads and bridges did not exist and travel through the forest was nearly impossible and very time consuming. The string of lakes and rivers across New York and the Great Lakes region was instrumental in securing the territory rich in furs. Both the French and English had vast economic interests in the area and set up chains of forts to protect their claims. Here we see two native birch bark canoes, the main mode of transportation, traversing one the lakes with their Indian paddlers. The woodland tribes learned quickly the power and of furs and their worth in trade goods which greatly improved their native material culture and way of life. Time and history proved this dependency of white trade goods to be their greatest downfall.
