The Young Captive
This is a painting I executed from a summer scene in western NY at Letchworth State Park. This creek flows into a larger stream called Wolf Creek and ends at a very steep and beautiful waterfalls which empties into the Genesee River. This state park is on the ancient Seneca homelands and has a nice museum of various cabins erected on their council grounds. This is the area where Mary Jameson lived, "The White Woman of the Genesee".
In this painting we see a small war party heading home with a young male captive. Due to a shrinking native population many young children were captured during frontier raids and taken to families who had lost sons or daughters so these whites could be adopted into their families. Over time these youths assimilated into the native cultures and became a true part of their family and culture. Many upon liberation after the war refused to go back to their white families.
